Tiling rocket launch an airfield with its wings folded. This rocket design was developed by the German engineer Reinhold Tiling (1893-1933). The 2.7-metre-long rockets were launched with their wings folded, ascending from the thrust provided by a gunpowder-like powder fuel. After the fuel was expended, the wings would unfold to allow the rocket to glide in a spiral back to the ground. A successful flight carrying postcards was achieved in 1931. Tiling carried out these tests in 1933 at Berlin Tempelhof Airport. He died later that year (in October) when an accident with the powder fuel caused a fatal explosion in his workshop | |
