Adam Smith (1723-1790),Scottish philosopher. He was born and educated at Kikaldy,Scotland, before entering the University of Glasgow at the age of thirteen and Oxford University at the age of seventeen. In 1751 Smith became professor of logic and then moral philosophy at Glasgow. His main work was An Enquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations. This was the first work to deal with economics separately from politics, ethics and law. He showed that rent, wages and profits are the source of all income. Smith believed that more wealth was produced with free trade and freedom from governmental interference. In this environment individuals acting selfishly would be led by an invisible hand to achieve the best for all. This lithograph is from an 1869 edition of The Wealth of Nations | |
