Sperm whale tooth. Single tooth in the lower jaw of a dead sperm whale (Physeter macrocephalus). A sperm whale's teeth, also known as whale ivory, only develop in its lower jaw. This tooth is around 10 centimetres high and 5 centimetres in diameter. The teeth are not thought to be needed for feeding, and may be used in fights between males. This whale washed up on Balmedie Beach near Aberdeen,in the Grampian Region of Scotland. It was some 10 metres long, and weighed around 25 tons. Photographed in October | |
