Bee pollen basket, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). The pollen basket (called the corbicula) is found on a bee's hind legs. The bee moistens its fore legs with its tongue, and brushes pollen from its head, body and mouthparts towards the hind legs. The pollen is transferred to the pollen comb on the hind legs, and then compacted and transferred to the outside surface of the hind legs. There, the pollen ends up in a concavity surrounded by hairs. Honey or nectar is used to moisten the dry pollen. A single pollen grain (green) is seen here. Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres across | |
