Aristolochia grandis flower. This plant emits a strong odour that smells like rotting meat. The odour attracts flies that help to pollinate it. The flies travel down the tubular shaped flower but are unable to escape due to forward pointing hairs. Pollen from the flies' bodies is transferred to the flower's reproductive organs at the base of the flower. Once pollination has occurred the forward pointing hairs wilt and the flies are able to escape. As they leave, they take on a fresh supply of pollen | |
