Josiah Wedgwood (1730-1795),British potter and industrialist. In his youth,Wedgwood contracted smallpox, which resulted in him losing a leg. As he couldn't use a pottery wheel,he designed pots and glazes instead, and is credited with the industrialisation of the pottery industry. The most famous of his products is coloured jasperware (example at centre left). Wedgwood was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society for his invention of the pyrometer for measuring oven temperatures. He was also a fervent supporter of the abolition of the slave trade | |
