Salt lake miner,Senegal. Crystals of salt on the skin of a miner collecting salt from the bed of Lake Retba (the 'Rose Lake'),a salt lake in Senegal. This salt lake,40 kilometres north of Dakar,is mined for its salt deposits. The pink colour of the lake is due to extremophile bacteria that are found in its waters. In this case, the bacteria are halophiles, thriving on the high salt concentration that ranges from 80 to 300 grams per litre. The salt miners cover their skin with shea butter, from the nuts of the shea tree. This is a natural moisteriser that also protects them from the sunlight and high salt concentrations | |
