Large tornado darkening the sky. A tornado is a violent rotating column of air that can form during the growth of a cumulonimbus (thunderstorm cloud). The largest tornadoes form from severe thunderstorms called supercells. Large tornadoes can be over 1.5 kilometres across and travel many kilometres before dissipating. Wind speeds of hundreds of kilometres an hour can destroy houses and other objects in their path.
