Gabbro rock. Polarised light micrograph of gabbro,a coarse-grained igneous rock, formed by the slow and gradual crystallization of basaltic magma at large depth under the Earth's surface. Gabbros are distinguished from other plutonic rocks by their high content of plagioclase-feldspars and pyroxene. Here, the elongate, lamellar feldspars are embedded in a disorganised way in the colourful matrix of pyroxenes and olivine.
