Lavender leaf oil gland. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an oil gland on the surface of a French lavender (Lavandula dentata) leaf. The gland is a secretory trichome (hair-like structure),which produces and stores the oil that gives lavender its distinctive fragrance. When the leaf is touched or damaged, the gland ruptures, releasing the oil and therefore the fragrance. A number of stomata (pores, oval) can also be seen in the background.
