Robert FitzRoy (1805-1865). Caricature of the British meteorologist and Royal Navy vice-admiral,Robert FitzRoy,showing him with a large nose and ears. FitzRoy is best known for captaining the HMS Beagle during its famous voyage on which Charles Darwin was a passenger. FitzRoy did a great deal of scientific work himself,in geographical surveying, navigation, astronomy and chronometric measurement. After serving as Governor of New Zealand from 1843-5,he developed an interest in meteorology and pioneered accurate weather-forecasting. His methods were controversial among his peers, and the challenges of establishing a weather service led to his depression and eventual suicide | |
