Sabre-toothed cat fossil. Cast of the skull of a sabre-toothed cat. The cast was made from a specimen found in the Rancho La Brea tar pits in Los Angeles,USA. The most common specimens found here are from the Smilodon genus. This specimen dates from the Pleistocene epoch (1.8 million to 10,000 years ago). Smilodon sabre-toothed cats were powerful predators with a robust build similar to that of a bear. Their maxillary canines protruded outside their mouths,and could reach over 15 centimetres in length | |
