Chestnut wood. Polarised light micrograph of a longitudinal section through wood of the horse chestnut,Aesculus hippocastanum. Xylem vessels are seen running top to bottom (blue); xylem is responsible for the upward transport of water and solutes in the plant, from the roots into the stem and leaves. Here, these elongated vessels are reinforced and strengthened with spiral bands. Spiral bands allow xylem vessels to elongate and grow lengthwise. Xylem rays (pink) run at right angles to the xylem vessels. In mature woody plants, xylem makes up the bulk of vascular tissue in the stems and branches. Magnification: x20 at 6x7cm size | |
