Staked tree. Trunk of a newly-planted young birch tree (Betula sp.) strapped to a basal support. The tree has been staked in order to support it in high winds and from vandalism. This is necessary with trees grown in nurseries because their root spread is relatively limited. It has been staked at the base of the stem rather than just below the crown in order to allow the tree to move in the wind, which encourages thickening at the base | |
