Mushroom gills. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the gills of an unidentified gilled mushroom. The mushroom is the fruiting body of a fungus. It is grown to distribute the spores by which a fungus reproduces. There are many ways that a mushroom can do this, and a common way is for the mushroom to develop a cap with these gills (rippling folds of tissue) on the underside. When the spores have matured, they drop from the gills and fall to the ground or are carried on the wind to start a new fungal body. Magnification: x10 at 6x7cm size | |
