Shaggy ink cap mushrooms (Coprinus comatus),or lawyer's wigs, growing in the ground. These are the edible fruiting bodies of this fungus, which grows in grassy areas and rubbish heaps, particularly in recently disturbed soil. The mushrooms have gills on the underside of the caps in which the reproductive spores ripen. The ink caps get their name from the black fluid produced as the fungus auto-digests its own mushrooms | |
