Acid-loving bacteria. Scanning electron micro- graph (SEM) of a group of the extremophile bacteria Acidiphilium sp. Some of these rod- shaped bacteria are seen undergoing cell fission, the division of one cell into two. This obligately acidophilic (acid-loving) species is found in acid mine wastes. Extremophile bacteria live in extreme conditions such as extreme pH (highly acid or highly alkaline environments),very cold or hot conditions, high pressure or salt environments. Acidophilic bacteria are being studied for their possible use in breaking down highly acid waste,or for removing compounds such as iron from waste. Magnification: unknown | |
