Haemophilus influenzae. Coloued transmission electron micrograph of Haemophilus influenzae bacteria. Note the capsulated cell walls (red and yellow) and the chromosomal material (white). A non-motile Gram-negative bacillus,H. influenzae is an important pathogen in young children. It colonises the upper respiratory tract in most humans within the first months of life, and is usually harmless. However,it may spread locally and cause diseases of the lower respiratory tract such as bronchitis and pneumonia. Certain capsulated strains are the most common cause of bacterial meningitis and epiglottitis in children. Magnification: x31,800 at 6x7cm size | |
