False-colour transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Branhamella catarrhalis, formerly known as Neisseria catarrhalis,a species of Gram- negative bacteria which exists as one of the commonest commensals of the human nose and throat. Like Neisseriae such as the gonococcus,Branhamellae appear as pairs, called diplococci (centre of image). B. catarrhalis occasionally causes low-grade infections of the lower respiratory tract or acute infections of the middle ear (otitis media) in immune deficient patients. Treatment is with cephalosporins & erythromcin. Magnification: x11,000 at 35mm size,x22,000 at 6x7cm size | |
