Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of Bacillus subtilis, showing an individual of the rod-shaped,gram positive species of bacteria approaching the end of division by binary fission. The cytoplasms of two ultimate daughter cells are divided by a densely stained cell wall (which surrounds the entire bacterium). The pale areas in each half of the dividing cell are nuclear bodies, containing genetic information in the form of DNA. In rapidly growing bacterial cells the process of nuclear division proceeds ahead of cell division. B. subtilis also produces endospores (resting cells) which germinate & give rise to vegetative cells. Magnification: X 100,000 at 10x8 size | |
