Demonstration of a SQUID magnetometer which incorporates one of the new high-temperature superconductors,yttrium-barium-copper oxide (Y- Ba2-Cu3- O7-x). The SQUID (superconducting quantum interference device) detects very small changes in magnetic field,as displayed on the oscilloscope screen. Discovered in 1986,the new superconducting ceramic materials are expected to lead to a technological revolution & are the subject of intensive worldwide research. The use of the new superconductors in SQUIDs is likely to be their first practical application. The photo was taken at the University of Birmingham | |
