Standing waves pattern on a drum skin. Sand was spread over the drum skin and the drum was then repeatedly hit (lower centre). The sand was displaced from areas of movement (antinodes) to areas where the drum skin remained still (nodes). These nodes and antinodes form standing waves and do not change position. They are caused by the repeated interference of waves with identical wavelengths, moving in opposite directions to each other. Constructive interference causes displacement, destructive interference does not | |
