Hawaiian geese (Branta sandvicensis) on an old lava flow. The nene, or Hawaiian goose, is Hawaii's state bird. The nene gets its Hawaiian name from its soft call. Its strong toes have reduced webbing, an adaptation to the lava flows on which it breeds. The Hawaiian goose is the world's rarest goose. It is found only in Hawaii and is an endangered species.
