Debris disc around star HD 181327, Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) image. This research detected carbon monoxide (CO) in the disc of debris around this F-type star, the first such detection around a star of this type. This star is 170 light years from Earth, in the constellation of Telescopium. This study found that the CO gas was produced recently, probably due to collisions of icy planetesimals in the disc, similar to comets. Such exocometary gas in a debris ring may help characterize planetary systems, the formation of planets, and the possibilities of habitable planets and life in such systems.
