Leptodactylus bolivianus, the South American bullfrog. This male specimen was photographed on the Caribbean island of Trinidad. The forelimbs of the male are well developed & muscular, which together with a spine on the thumb are used to hold the female during the mating embrace (amplexus). The grip from this frog is sufficiently strong to break the skin of a human. The genus Leptodactylus are nest- building frogs, laying their eggs in foam masses, which are placed in or near the water. Although frogs are generally not aggressive towards each other, L. bolivianus is known to push intruders out of their nests. | |
