Azure poison dart frog. Azure,or blue, poison dart frog (Dendrobates azureus) on a rock. This tiny frog inhabits the forest floors of the tropical rainforests in a small area of Surinam in northern South America. They prefer to live in the vicinity of streams and rivers, and eat small insects. Their bright blue skin warns potential predators that they are highly poisonous. Glands in their skin secrete a potent poison, and native people in their habitat use this to tip their blow darts. Darts prepared in this way paralyse monkeys and birds almost instantly. They grow to only five centimetres in length. Photographed in Surinam | |
