Blue poison dart frog. View of a blue,or azure, poison dart frog (Dendrobates azureus). These frogs live only in a small area of Surinam,in northern South America. They inhabit areas near streams in forest regions. They may reach a length of almost five centimetres, and eat small fruit flies and other insects. Their skin contains a strong toxin which prevents them from being preyed upon. Indigenous indians from the same areas use extracts from their skin to tip their blow darts and arrows. The poisons almost instantly kill many small animals, such as monkeys and birds. Photographed in Surinam | |
