Daisy brittle star. The daisy brittle star (Ophiopholis aculeata) lives on rocky sea floors from north-eastern Canada as far south as the north-eastern USA. It is primarily a scavenger, feeding on detritus on the seabed, although bivalve molluscs may be taken also. Its arms may reach a length of up to eight centimetres. Unlike other echinoderms, brittle stars move using their entire arms rather than their countless tube feet (not seen). They are known to drop a limb if it is damaged or held (a process which gave them their name). Lost limbs are regenerated. They have long life spans, some reaching over 20 years old.
