Toads mating. View of two Bufo typhonius toads mating on the rainforest floor. The male (top) is smaller and more slender than the female. Both male and female have light and dark brown markings which gives them good camouflage against the rainforest floor. When a male encounters a female ready to spawn he climbs onto her back (amplexus). When the female is ready to ovulate, eggs are released into water as long fibres which are quickly fertilised by the male's sperm. Once ovulation ceases the male climbs off,and the female leaves the site. Photographed in Ecuador | |
