A breeding aggregation of Phyllomedusa trinitatis, the Trinidad leaf frog,or green tree frog. This species is found on the Caribbean island of Trinidad & in South America. Nocturnal creatures, they live in trees & bushes surrounding ponds. The female (centre) is 90mm long; the males, four of which are seen here, are smaller at 80mm. Breeding occurs at the start of the rainy season in June. Aggregations form when there is a shortage of females. Females lay eggs in nests of leaves folded into tubes, positioned above a pond. When the eggs hatch the larvae fall into the water & develop as tadpoles. Adult tree frogs feed on large insects, including crickets & moths | |
