Turbot fish. Macrophotograph of an immature turbot,Scophthalmus maximus,a type of flatfish. The turbot has adapted to a life on the seabed. When born, the turbot resembles many other fish but as it matures the body flattens and the right eye migrates to the left side. The eyeless side becomes the fish's underside. The mottled appearance of the upper side gives it an excellent camouflage when resting on the sea floor; it can change its colour to some extent to match its surroundings. The turbot feeds on small fish, crustaceans and molluscs, opening its mouth and sucking them in whole. Magnification: x1.5 at 35mm size | |
