Clown fish,Amphiprion bicinctus, with a giant anemone. Clown fish are also known as anemone fish because they live an extremely close symbiotic association (both partners benefit) with anemones. Each species of clown fish lives together with a different species of anemone. Amphiprion bicinctus sleeps within the arms of the giant anemone,with- draws to the anemone when danger approaches, and brings food to it. It even lays its eggs here. The protection offered by the poison tentacles is ex- changed for food brought by the clown fish and its cleaning abilities. Healthy clown fish are immune to the anemone's poison. Their white body stripes resemble tentacles. Photographed in the Red Sea | |
