Spider web construction. Computer trace of the movements made by a Cyrtophora citricola spider as it constructed its silk web. The red lines show the spider's path as it formed initial structures such as anchor threads. Yellow lines relate to the construction of the web's horizontal capture sheet and green lines to the vertical threads, which are built last. Flying prey falls onto the non-sticky capture sheet after striking the vertical threads. It is then grabbed by the waiting spider. The web, which takes several nights to build, lasts several weeks. This work was carried out at the University of Basel in Switzerland using a video camera attached to an image scanning device | |
