Polyphemus water flea head. Confocal light micrograph of the head of a Polyphemus sp. water flea (a type of crustacean). Polyphemus is recognisable by its single large eye (lower right),which it uses to hunt small prey, such as other water fleas. Polyphemus species produce two types of females, sexual and asexual, with different appearance, physiology and behaviour. Females can grow to 1.5 millimetres (mm) across, while males only reach 0.8 mm. A confocal microscope detects light only from the focal point of its objective lens. By moving the focal point, images of thin sections of an intact specimen (as here) can be obtained.
