Polyphemus water flea. Confocal light micrograph of a Polyphemus sp. water flea (a type of crustacean). This is an optical section through the animal's upper body. Polyphemus is recognisable by its single large eye (lower right),which it uses to hunt small prey, such as other water fleas. Polyphemus species have two types of females, sexual and asexual, with different appearance, physiology and behaviour. These animals are about 0.9-1.5 millimetres across. A confocal microscope detects light only from the focal point of its objective lens, allowing images of thin sections of an intact specimen to obtained. Magnification unknown | |
