Woodlouse (suborder Oniscidea) underside, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). A woodlouse is a terrestrial crustacean with gill-like lungs that require damp conditions for gas exchange. It has seven pairs of legs (yellow) and two pairs of antennae (upper centre),one of which is vestigal and not seen. The soft segmented body is covered on top by a hard carapace (its exoskeleton). It feeds on dead wood and plants, performing a vital role in the decay cycle, and is eaten by numerous insects and other small animals. Woodlouse species live in damp, dark conditions all over the world. Magnification: x15 at 6x7cm size | |
