Antarctic slipper lobster (Parribacus antarcticus) on an unidentified sponge. This crustacean has a flattened appearance and a pair of shovel-like extensions in front of its eyes (black). These extensions are modified antennae. This lobster inhabits reefs in the Indo-Pacific region. It is a carnivore, eating molluscs and other reef invertebrates. It will also scavenge on dead flesh. Slipper lobsters are edible, but not numerous, and fishing is normally restricted. This specimen is about 20 centimetres long. Photographed off Kapalai,Malaysia | |
