Melon jellyfish. Interference patterns of light along the length of a melon jellyfish,Beroe sp.. Melon jellyfish are part of the Ctenophora class of comb jellyfish,so called because of the rows of tiny,hair-like cilia along the length of their bodies. These cilia beat in pulses to propel the jellyfish through the water. The cilia are so close together that they cause interference eff- ects with the light; the different distances bet- ween the cilia during a pulse producing a range of colours. Melon jellyfish grow up to 5cm long and feed on plankton using retractable, feathery tent- acles (withdrawn here) which stick to the prey. Melon jellyfish are found in seas around the world | |
