Yellow creeplet sea anemones. View of yellow creeplet sea anemones (orange,Parazoanthus axinellae) among sponges (pink). Sea anemones are comprised of a cylindrical body which is unable to support itself out of water. They attach themselves to rocks with one end of their body, whilst the other end has a central mouth surrounded by tentacles. These tentacles are armed with stinging cells which paralyse the small marine animals, such as plankton, they feed on. Sponges are primitive sessile (fixed) multicell- ular structures which are supported by a skeleton of silica, calcium carbonate or a protein known as spongin. Photographed at Port Safaga,Egypt | |
