Hydra polyp. Light micrograph of a freshwater coelenterate polyp,Hydra sp with reproductive buds forming at upper centre beneath the tent- acles. The anterior of the creature consists of a mouth surrounded by tentacles. These capture food such as small water fleas and algal cells floating past on the current. These are then passed to the mouth, from where their remains are also excreted. In good feeding conditions,Hydra sp. reproduces asexually by budding off daughter polyps. In poor conditions sexual cells are released into the water for fertilization. The Hydra genus is remarkable in its ability to regenerate itself when damaged. Magnification: x30 at 35mm size | |
