Influenza virion internal structure, cutaway artwork. This flu virus (Orthomyxovirus) particle (virion) consists of a core of RNA (ribonucleic acid, green). This core is coated with a matrix protein shell (pink). An outer membrane layer (blue, edged in yellow) is obtained from the host cell that produced this virion. Viral proteins in the membrane are haemagglutinin (red, evenly distributed) and neuraminedase enzymes (yellow clusters). These aid the process of entering and exiting a cell when the virion is replicating itself. This virus infects the respiratory tract, causing a fever and aching muscles.
