Radar-tracked bee. Time-lapse image produced by a harmonic radar system when tracking the flight of a tagged bumble bee,Bombus sp.. The bee's path is at upper left. Tagged hives and feeding grounds appear at upper centre & right. The tags have an antenna which reflects a component (harmonic) of the incoming radar waves. By looking for harmonic reflections,"noise" from obstacles is eliminated. This system has been developed at the National Resources Institute in Malvern,UK,by Joe Riley to test the smallest-ever radar antenna. This bee tracking forms part of pollination research. The radius of the outermost circle is 463 m; image resolution is +/- 7m. (Compare with G355/045) | |
