Fossil amphibian footprints. Paleontologist Jerry McDonald cleaning soil from a slab of rock containing prehistoric amphibian footprints. These date from the Lower Permian period about 280 million years before present. Such footprints were made in soft mud which then baked solid in subsequent drought. Wind-blown sediments then filled the prints, preserving them from following waterborne sediments. This example was found in the Robledo Mountains region of New Mexico,USA | |
