Fossilized spider's web. Thread of silk from a spider's web preserved in amber dating from the Early Cretaceous period, approximately 130 million years ago. The thread has glue droplets along its length and is almost identical to threads made by living spiders belonging to the superfamily Araneoidea. Adhesive (viscid) threads may slow the rate at which the thread dries, and help bring insects to a stop. This amber was found in amber beds near Jezzine in Lebanon. Amber is the fossilized resin of pine and other trees. Magnification: x230 when printed 10cm wide | |
