The smooth newt or common newt (Lissotriton vulgaris) is an amphibian widespread over a greater part of Europe, excluding the Iberian peninsula and Scandinavia. It was formerly known under the name triturus vulgaris. It is the most common species of the Lissotriton genus (family Salamandridae) with the adult specimen reaching a size of about 10 cm. The larvae initially have a compact shape,as seen in this example but soon adopt the lengthier outlines of the adult species. Actual size of specimen in this microscopic sample is 6 mm | |
