Toco toucan in a tree. The toco toucan (Ramphastos toco) is the largest of the toucans, reaching a length of over 60 centimetres. Its huge bill alone may be 20 centimetres long. It inhabits the canopies of open rainforests in South America east of the Andes. It lives in small flocks, which noisily fly around trees by day. It feeds mainly on fruit, although it also takes large insects and even lizards and small birds. Photographed in the Pantanal,Brazil | |
