Prehistoric fish brain. Hand of a palaeontologist from the French National Museum of Natural History,holding the fossil containing the oldest fossil brain discovered at the time (2009). The graphics tablet shows digital images of the skull (green and blue) and brain (orange) of a fish from 300 million years ago. The brain is seven millimetres long. Casts (white) of parts of the fossil have been made from scanning data (X-ray synchrotron microtomography) using a 3D printer. The original fossil is of an iniopterygian,an extinct relative of ratfishes (ghost sharks). It was found in shales in Kansas and Oklahoma,USA | |
