Pollen of the common mallow. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of three pollen grains of the Common Mallow,Malva sylvestris. The grains are spherical and about 108 micrometres in diameter. The outer wall (exine) has sharp spines which enables the pollen to attach to the body of pollinator insects. Here,the three grains are connected by strands of fatty material. This fatty material causes the pollen grains to form into clumps,which assists the bee pollinator to collect large amounts of pollen. Once transferred to the stigma of another flower,each pollen grain can fertilise an egg in the ovary,to form a seed. Magnification: x140 at 6x6cm size | |
