High-speed footage of a thermite reaction. Thermite is a mixture of iron oxide and aluminium, which reacts vigorously when ignited, producing pure iron and aluminium oxide. The reaction is extremely exothermic, raising the temperature to more than 2000 degrees Celsius. This is much higher than the melting point of iron, which is produced as a liquid. Molten iron is seen dripping from the base of the pot here. Thermite is often used to weld together rail or tram tracks. | |
